Potatoes have been grown commercially in Jersey since the late 18th century.  Before long the Island farmers realised that Jersey was ideal for growing early potatoes.

Competition was fierce in Londons Covent Garden Market and the early potato farmers searched for the best variety.  In 1880 Hugh De La Haye from Bushy Farm in St. Helier found a huge potato with 15 shoots on the stall of the great variety hunter Jean Lecaudey.  Hugh cut this potato into 15 pieces, planted them and grew the first 15 Jersey Royal Flukes as they were first called. 

Very soon the Jersey Royal as it became known, was grown commercially all over the Island and slipped into a happy partnership with the world famous Jersey Cow.  Over 100 years later and the Jersey Royal Potato enjoys EU Protection of Designation of Origin and tens of thousands of tons are still enjoyed every year from April to July.
